1405-1407 Republic Street Initiative

Miami University, Department of Architecture and Interior Design's new "Atelier" program work from within the offices of CR architecture + design in Cincinnati, Ohio to renovate a 19th century apartment building for Cincinnati's top affordable housing provider, Over-the-Rhine Community Housing (OTRCH). From January to the end of April, we worked with CR and OTRCH to start the design process for 1405-1407 Republic Street, a 5-story 16 unit apartment building that perfectly characterizes Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine Italianate architecture. In addition to bringing the project through design development, the group also surveyed, documented, and applied for Historic Tax Credits on both the State and Federal levels, providing an estimated 25% of the total project budget. For the students, it was more than just another studio, but a real world endeavor into the architecture profession, provided graciously by CR offering their space, staff, and resources. In the design, the building's 16 units are consolidated into 12 units of various sizes to accommodate a range of families and student housing, and the retail spaces in the front are restored. An elevator is inserted into the gracious interior courtyard, as well as a glazed lobby that connects the two sides and looks into the remainder of the courtyard. Once funding comes through, the project is expected to start construction in 2011.
