I would point out that a less brittle tool may have an advage in most apps. Who wants to worry that a blade will snap in half while batoning? on the other hand who wants to stop in the middle of butchering to resharpen? I have always want to try my hand at blaksmithing so I'm really enjoying this, thanks.

you can case harden mild steel. it doesnt have the strength of a higher carbon steel but if you harden it and temper it right its quite effective

I learnt something too :) Excellent test.....
great experiment Mook! isnt it cool to have a question come up, and not only be able to answer it, but show the answer aswell!
thanks

@captjeff78 That's exactly why I wanted to do this one. The principle of hardenability is much more concrete in my mind now that I have actually demonstrated it myself, for myself.

you can fold the mild steel in with the o1, and make a mixture that works very well..its a form of damascus, and has to be folded numerous times...but the result is worth the effort in my opnion
