Michigan Dirt Bike Ride IT200S

Jamie fried his clutch on his CR250 the day before, so he was relegated to my old 1986 IT200. I rode this bike for 20 yrs and could make it snake through the Michigan woods pretty good, but low ground clearance, a non-disc rear brake that causes excessively low toes when braking and too many stumps and roots finally forced me to retire it for a YZ250. I broke my right big toe 3 times and the foot another time on that bike, once during the 86 Jackpine enduro.

i got a 1985 it200 do you know what the carb settings are suppose to on both screws? (right side of carb)

@mojaverider97 The screw with the plastic knob on the end is the idle air screw (furthest back) and should be GENTLY screw in until it stops and then backed out three quarters of a turn. The other is the idle adjustment screw. This should be adjusted to get the idle speed you want (turn it in to increase speed/out to decrease engine speed). This screw can develop a flat spot over time and be hard to adjust. If this is true, take it out and sand the flat spot round again. That last another 27 yrs

@YoraRiderYamaRider I have an 86 200 with a 85 motor in it. Sometimes it runs backwards. I know its timing but do you know if this is because it is too advanced or retarded? and what oil/fuel ratio did you run on your it200?

@FENDER45BD The Timing is too advanced... as the piston approaches TDC the plug fires too early driving the piston backwards and causing the engine to spin backwards. I experienced this on a '73 RT1 that some guy tried to tune himself before bringing it to the dealer (me). It's quite unnerving when you release the clutch and the bike goes backwards. Correct timing for the '85 IT200 is 2.43 +/- .17mm BTDC.

@FENDER45BD I run Penzoil 2 stroke oil @ 24:1 in all my bikes. I've never fouled a plug, carbon stuck a ring, or had any sign of wear (rings last ~100 hrs). Yamaha recommends this in the IT200, but I run the same gas in my YZ250, where Yamaha recommends 30:1. You'll hear all kind of "experts" telling you to run 40:1 or leaner, Don't Listen To That BS.

@FENDER45BD - BTW, more important than the brand of oil you use is ALWAYS USE THE SAME BRAND. Never mix brands, the additives when mixed can result in carbon bridging of the plugand leave you stranded.

@ws6transam84 Well, I'm a little biased… the IT200 is indestructible, although so is the IT250. I've broken my right foot so many times that I really can't recommend a drum rear brake, but a WR200 had a very weak engine (not sure why it is weak compared to the IT200, but it is). My main "buddy bike" is a '89 YZ250. We've beat the piss out of it and it just keeps going. The power is smooth & torquey, yet it'll really go if you get on the pipe, and the disc rear brake makes it foot safe.

I run a '92 WR500 through the woods up there now; and I'm currently rebuilding any '83 IT250K for the 'buddy bike' - though I'm thinking an '86 IT200 or a '92 WR200 might be a better choice for the buddy bike... What do you think?
