@darthmorgen It means all his life he was devoted to work, living like a "normal" human being, like he was supposed too, being someone honest and respectful. But he is thrown into the real world in that night and he realizes how insignificant it all was, all the years working, all his life wasted on cheap things, how people don't care about each other and live in fear, when he discovered that life is all about love.

I can't decide what he means when he says he worked all his life. Does it mean that he has been employed all his life and that this hard work entitles him to a little respect which he feels he is not getting?
