This video shows the results of a test for lead (Pb) contamination of dishware (a desert plate in this case). You will see the color of the test pads both with a positive result, and a negative result. The plate tested was marketed by "tag" copyright 2000, made in Thailand and marked as "dishwasher and microwave safe." They didn't mark it "safe for contact with food." I guess not!
There has been a lot of press about Chinese made products with lead (Plumbum) contamination. But it can come from anywhere--not only China. Beware of almost anything. I do trust American-made dishware much more--if it is verifiably produced in USA not merely marketed or finished, and is of recent production.
From reading about the problem, it is clear that lead-contamination is still a problem with dishware produced in Europe as well as the far east, though not as prevalent, and that American as well as foreign ceramics from before the 1970s or so often contained lead in the glaze--older American pottery in your home may have hazardous lead levels and this is not a function of colored glazes alone: it can be part of the clear glaze on white pottery.
Thanks for the share I re-posted this, I know that its out their I saw a recall over on the Target store about a year ago for a set of dishes. Another heads up to people who collect, what the age if you buy in Goodwills.

Wow, that's interesting. Thanks for posting. I have several tag dishes. I think I'll test them.
