Petra, which means "rock" in Greek, was an ancient, powerful trading city. It's buildings were carved out of Petra's red rocks, including the Treasury, Petra's star. The Treasury remains so cinematic that it was featured as the exterior for the climax of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

This clip, devoted to Petra's Treasury, is a segment from "Land of Milk and Chutzpah" a free video presenting a 1995 trip to Israel and Petra, Jordan. The video includes Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, the Galilee, Golan Heights, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Masada & the Dead Sea. Jewish, Islamic, and Christian holy places are all presented. (The movie reflects a time of optimism regarding the peace process, and the viewer should approach it from the context of 1995.)

  • Petra is a greek word(crack in the rock)......thats all.

It was built by the nabateans way before the greeks even discovered it.Egyptians also recorded the location. Many towns and even people(cristos-the christ) were named so b/c it was the greeks who documented them. As many cities/landmarks in Egypt have greek names .. Greek lang. was the language of education. Like latin would later be in Europe. Petra was not a Greek city. .......

    peace

  • this is the ancient city where the israelis will take refugee during the last days of the antichrist reign on earth.

  • @translationwiz god......I did not want to split hait with anyone and I didnt contradict anything you say. I was just speaking generally about etymology........ peace

  • @eabffe My point is that Petra was built by locals. Greeks were there early true. but thats all I will cede.as for the word, i'm not going to split hairs w/you. even if its a rock we are talking about. LOL

    peace

  • @translationwiz I am greek and petra means just rock ,not crack in the rock, both in modern and ancient greek. Also, for the record the world christ, derived from the greek κεχρισμένος ( kehrismenos ), which means the one that has the chrismation ( derived from the greek world χρίσμα, pronounced hrisma). Finally, as you can see, greek influences are obvious not only in the name but in the architecture of thebuilding as well.

    ooooooooooooof finish , peace

  • Wonderful PETRA!!!!!!

  • So do you guys believe this was built by human?

  • @JayBrew391 Perhaps.......it depends on context and variance of the language. IF you split up the word.....Pe-tra........it means "You can see"- in some semetic dialects. It also means exposed.......But for the context used by the historians, referring to this location...it means the crack in the rock. Personally, historical terms over time get mistranslated&parts or whole meanings are lost. But I dont want to go down that ave..LOL. LEts rely on the accepted meaning of the historians.

    peace

  • @translationwiz petra means "crack in the rock"? doesnt it just mean rock?

  • @freefapi Yeb and true
