Malta: Għargħur - Feast of St Bartholomew 2009
Għargħur became a Parish in 1610 and it stands on the same location where a former chapel was located. Population of the tiny village is about 2600.
The present parish church was built and designed by Maltese Architect Tumas Dingli (1610-1638). The style of the church is Doric. Some interiors and its façade are Baroque style.
It is enriched with artistic works: altar pieces, marbles, stone carving, wood-work, gilding, silverware, bells, statues, etc.
The liturgical feast of St Bartholomew is held on the August 24. The celebration is held in Għargħur on the following Sunday.
The statue of Saint Bartholomew was sculptured in Rome by Maltese artist Melchiore Gafa'. It was brought unpainted from Rome in 1771. The price then was €23.93 in today's money.
In works of art, St Bartholomew is often represented with a large knife, or, as in Michelangelo's Last Judgment, with his own skin hanging over his arm. Tradition holds that in Armenia he was flayed alive and then crucified upside down for refusing to worship pagan gods. This fate led to him being adopted as the patron saint of tanners.
The hymns you hear are the one used during the exit of the procession and the "Innu Marċ" of the Socjeta' Filarmonika San Bartilmew of Għargħur which was established in 1985. The petards and fireworks are by the Għaqda tan-Nar San Bartilmew, Għargħur.
Thanks to Carmel Vella for the copy of the hymns.
