Music video using Kirsty Beilharz's original composition for shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) and ensemble edited for video with footage and composites shot and compiled during my Paris residency at Cite des Arts in 2005. All video, images and music are my original material.

The original music performance was 28 minutes long: this recording is an edited conflation. The original piece composed in 2000 is called "The White Face of the Geisha" for solo shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) and ensemble. Performed by Ensemble Recherche Freiburg at Hannover Biennale 2000, Iwamoto Yoshikazu (shakuhachi soloist), conducted by Bohdan Shved, duration. Awarded International Composition Competition Prize DM.8,000. The score, parts and recording are available from the Australian Music Centre www.australianmusiccentre.com.au

  • fantastic.

  • What a fantastic piece of music. I signed up just so I could leave a comment - I can't belive no one has so far. It beats the Takemitsu 'November Steps'(minus the annoying biwa for a start.) It has some echoes of Roberto Gerhard. Great use of the shak and an imaginative video.
