Another humble SSR rendition of a classic, the great Robert Johnson's 32-20 Blues. Played on my great Grand Dads late 1800's French parlor guitar. BTW, beatin' yer lady is wrong, even if she creepin' out on ya!!! Holler.

THE LOWDOWN:
Reny (J. Renard Collette) on vocals, National resonator and other 4, 6 and 12 stringed guitars, keys, bluesharp, lapsteel, production and songs, Lil' Bell (Maribel Landaetta) on drums and vocals and Bako Billy (Billy Fuller) on upright bass. Reny, Bell (together for 12 years) and Billy (added in 2003) blend bluesy/funky finger-style and slide guitar, original poignant songwriting and upright bass heavy grooves, to create an eclectic sound limited only by Reny's influences. Drawing mostly from pre-war blues, old school hip hop, roots and dancehall reggae, Sidestreet Reny and co. bring an eclectic yet familiar sound all their own. Reny's syncopated, soulful (singing or rapping) vocals and Bell's high harmonies have the power to take you all the way from a delta juke joint to a Brooklyn street corner before the first song is finished.

Over the years Reny has traveled extensively and shared the stage with such acts as A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Xanax 25, Bass and Trouble, Paula Fuga and Ice Cube (to name a few) and played at festivals and clubs throughout Scandinavia, Germany, and the U.S. Reny (aka J-sun or Jason Fine) has been featured on various international dance, pop and hiphop remixes and singles including Brian McKnight - I Can't Go For That, Vanessa Williams - The Comfort Zone remixes, Inner Circle - Bad Boys remix and a string of European releases. Reny has also accumulated an impressive back catalog of songs and recordings including 5 commercially unreleased cd's (gigs and shows only).

From sneaking into punk shows at the age of 12 to chasing the Grateful Dead at 14 and living on his own in Europe at 16 (as a sponsored skater/rapper), Reny has lead the kind of life that deserves to be written about... and that he does, with an honest poetic voice and passionate conviction. From songs about love and hate to art and social commentary to free-form rap lyrics ranging from boastful to political, Sidestreet Reny is truly a troubadour without confines.

PRESS REVIEWS:
"from early delta blues to early Jamaican toasting and on urban rap and hiphop is a direct line, though not a frequently traveled one, and Sidestreet Reny illustrates the links musically as well as lyrically... wow I love this!" - Woodstock Taylor UK (Garageband.com)

"..the passionate nature of the music and performance variations add to the spiritual nature of the music... a special outing for those afficianados looking for something different" - Laura Phillips (Music Connection)

"The result of their efforts is a seemingly organic blend of the elements, sewing 100 plus years of American music into a rich tapestry of eclectic yet somehow familiar sounds all their own........Like everything, and nothing you've ever heard, all at once." - Example Magazine

"one of the most interesting things I've heard in a long time" - Don Young (National Reso-Phonic guitars)

"Sidestreet Reny's Not Seen the Light of Day is original, well written and creative and therefore timeless....these guys are destined for movie and tv placement." - Todd Herfindal (Peer Music)

  • Damn, nothing beats the sound of a robert johnson song on an 1800's parlour guitar.

Your vocals are very reminicent of Seasick Steve, you may want to look him up for some... interesting... music (3-string trance music as he calls it)

  • Man oh man, thanx for the direct, man, Steve is the shit!! I musta been sleepin', people told me to check him out before and I never did. What a compliment, thanx alot my friend!! Holler.

  • niiice !

  • @BoyCary Not all that fucked up, not as fucked up as "Devil Got My Woman" where he says .."gonna beat my women till im satisfied". It was a diff time and we all know Johnson didnt mean it. Playing in a juke joint we tend to play what people find funny or painfully true. This is my fav son too......whoever this guy is, I would throw a 5.00 bill in his hat.

  • luv the groove.

  • Love it mate, great stuff!

  • jessupar hit it on the head bro!!!! And that Reny style ties it up and puts a bow on it!! Reny, God gave u a gift and ur using it incredibly!! I thank u for ur music, ur style, and most of all, bein that I am a blues lover and bass and 6 string player, ur influence!!

May God be with You Always Brother!

  • This is absolutely awesome!!

Tell me, could everyone learn to sing like him, or do you need some talent to start?

  • @sidestreetreny

It's not about beating her at all, but about "cutting her down" with a 32-20, he is singing about killing her, blowing her in two with one of the stronger pistols of the day.

  • What guitar is that?

  • this is by far the best cover of 32-20 on the internet. Great groove in your fingers, vocal nuances are well placed. Not one part is pretentious or exaggerated.

    Well done sir.

  • very very enjoyable...

my favourite not-to-the-original cover of a robert johnson song
