A Whitley of 102 Sqdn (Dalton) crashed at Pogmoor, Barnsley in 1941/2. Small bits of wreckage including a burnt map, prop blade and bomb release clip have been handed to Barnsley Museum and the report is with Barnsley Library (Archives).

I agree, not a single Whitley was saved which was criminal as it was a fantastic machine.

The Brits seem to have this bad habit of not preserving the fruits of their labors or their history.

These Planes Were called the Flying coffins

my dad joined the raf in 1938 his first posting was RAF Kinloss, The whitleys arrived the same year 14fts training wing i . my dad told me that loads of these planes crashed during takeof into findhorn bay.

did they call this 1 the flying coffin?
Not to my knowledge. My friend Group Captain Doug Iveson said it was a very docile and would not go any faster no matter what you did. He should know as he flew it on numerous operations before converting onto the Halifax.
