Paul LaMastra won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Film Editing, and the Eddie Award (A.C.E.) for Best Editing of a TV episode, for his work on Richard Berg's production of WALLENBERG: A Hero's Story (1985). The 200 minute film -- based on LOST HERO: The Mystery of Raoul Wallenberg, a biography by Thurston Clarke & Frederick Werbell (1982), was adapted for the screen by Gerald Green, and was directed by Lamont Johnson (and for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Direction).

WALLENBERG: A Hero's Story debuted as a mini-series on the NBC television network on April 8th, 1985, and premiered on Swedish television on October 15th, 1985. Richard Chamberlain (nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a made for television movie) was featured in the title role of Raoul Wallenberg, opposite Kenneth Colley as Adolph Eichman, and David Robb as Per Anger * in a cast that included Alice Krige, Stuart Wilson, Bibi Anderson, and Lena Olin

( * the actual Per Anger -- the Swedish diplomat who began the work which was to be continued and greatly expanded by Raoul Wallenberg, intervening to rescue thousands of Hungarian Jews from deportation and death during the Nazi occupation, provides the off-camera narration for the film).

Other key production credits .. Cinematography: Charles Correll, A.S.C. (nominated for an Emmy for the Outstanding Cinematography on WALLENBERG); with original music by Ernest Gold. Production Design: Michael Stringer. Costume Design: Thomas Welsh, and costumer Bob Horn (won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Costuming). In all, WALLENBERG was nominated for a total of 9 Emmy Awards, and won in 4 of those categories, in addition to the nomination of Lamont Johnson by the Director's Guild for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Special, and Richard Chamberlain's Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV.

  • Richard Chamberlain was the perfect match for this role. He could play the emotional Wallenberg, Stellan Skarsgård played a too formal verison.

    WW2 & the holocaust never cease to fascinate me.
