Speakers: Rev. Robert Jackson and Rev. DeVanie Jackson, Farm & Food Ministries, Brooklyn Rescue Mission; Christina Grace, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets; Kevin E. Jeffrey, Deputy Commissioner for Public Programs, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Christina Grace manages the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets' Urban Food Systems Program which includes farm to school, community and school gardening, and urban agriculture initiatives as well as efforts to connect New York farmers with the NYC marketplace. In this capacity her office has partnered with the NYC parks department, and the Brooklyn Rescue mission to support an unprecedented initiative to bring a full service farmers market to an underserved neighborhood in Brooklyn. Mission staff members began growing produce in the vacant lot behind their food pantry in 2004. Their marketing activities started when they enlisting teenage volunteers to run a sidewalk farm stand selling collards, tomatoes and figs.
