The only water I seem to like is hot water. Like showers. Showers are nice. Especially in five-star French hotels.... Although all the soaps were labeled in French. That was kind of odd, because I wasn't familiar with the French soap companies and what not, but at least I could decipher the labels.
Once I had completed my shower and smelt refreshingly of a fruit-like substance, I clothed myself in pajamas, despite the fact that the sun still shone in the outdoors. I laid down along the cot in the bedroom, releasing the tension from my muscles.
"Hey," said Nick pleasantly, entering the room. I shut my eyes, hoping he'd assume that I was asleep and leave.
"I want to go out," he continued simply. "Buuuut...we need to set some ground rules." He grinned sweetly.
I swallowed. "Um, like...?"
"You know: no running off, or yelling in French." His eyes narrowed, and he was still clutching my arm. "Understand?"
Again, I swallowed. "Yes...."
"Good." Nick released my arm and shoved me out of the bed. "What're you doing in your pajamas? Get dressed. It's only eleven AM."
I said nothing.
"Just get dressed," continued Nick, tossing me a pair of jeans and a shirt.
I bit my lip and put them on quickly. Nick widened the doorway of our hotel room and motioned toward it. "Ladies first," he remarked, grinning.
We left the hotel. Outside, it was nearing twilight, and the air smelled quite nice. The fragrant of flowers was heavily apart of it. My foreign language teacher had once told the class that the French were fond of gardening.
"Are you hungry?" asked Nick, and I shook my head, though he seemed to take no notice. "Okay. Cool. There's a restaurant around the corner." He grasped my shoulders and led me toward a fancy-looking diner, blandly labeled 'Un Nourriture', which translated to 'The Food' in English.
"Bonjour," said the Host, and I smiled weakly. Nick didn't reply, but instead told me to request a table.
The Host arched his eyebrows, realizing we were foreigners, and continued in our native language. "Sir, I speak English, too," he said. "A table for two?"
"Yeah. Thanks," answered Nick, once again steering me in the proper direction. The man grinned the entire way, though seemed annoyed already. Maybe Nick just radiated unfriendliness.
We were given menus and glasses of water. The man left so that we'd have a chance to order.
"Hey, what's wrong, baby?" said Nick, noticing my little interest in the menu.
"Oh, I dunno," I said sarcastically, suddenly experiencing a change of personality, "I've been forced to come to France .... Oh, and I'm pregnant. And It's a rape baby."
"Interesting," said Nick, his eyes rolling. That meant either he hadn't been paying what I'd said any mind, or simply didn't care. It was most likely the latter.
I attempted to leave the booth suddenly, but Nick boxed me in against the wall.
"Where are YOU going?"
"Bathroom...."
"Yeah, right. D'you think I'm stupid?"
"Yeah..." I noticed Nick's venomous expression, so I altered my answer. "N-no, I mean...."
A new man, this time a waiter who wasn't experienced in English, came to us and took our orders. I translated, and he left immidiately.
"So," said Nick, ripping a napkin to tiny shreds, "do you REALLY have to go to the bathroom?"
"Um..." I considered my answer. Actually, I'd just been hoping to get away. "Uh, not anymore...."
"Mmm," said Nick uninterestedly.
I sighed, irritated with his lack of concern, and snapped, "Can we LEAVE? Do you even have money?"
"Yeah," answered Nick, removing a wad of paper bills from his pocket.
This time, my eyes were rolling. "They only take euros here. You have to exchange the paper money for EUROS," I said, emphasizing the final word.
Nick gazed around stupidly, blushing, then said fiercly, "Get rid of your attitude, bitch."
I escaped the booth my crawling underneath the table and starting toward the exit. I expected Nick to come after me, but instead, crossed his arms across his chest. "Where are you going?" he asked calmly.
"Away," I replied, not facing him.
"Fine," said Nick, and the continuation of his calmness caused me to look at him, "go ahead. I'll just find you later, and when I do ... " he retrieved a second napkin and, again, ripped it apart, "it won't be ... pretty."
My teeth clamped down hard atop my lower lip, and I reclaimed my seat.
"That's what I thought," Nick said pleasantly.
The waiter returned, set Nick's plate of food down, and left again. Nick only stared at it, decided it was too "French-looking", and then hurried out of the restaurant without paying the fee.
God, I needed to get out of this country.
