Why all of you argue about him, why u see him in a bad way? Just he do this or that u think he is not real. For u no body good in yr eye, even buddha is the one who bring idea of nirvana or awakening is still not enough to be good for u.
Honestly you both have strong points of view but he bottom line is.. how do you really know what he is thinking. I am no mind reader and I have been mystified by his observing eyes in every video I have seen of him and wondering what he is thinking. However, the truth remains within him alone and if I had the chance I would probably ask (him) about this topic that you two are arguing about instead of guessing your arguments that's really getting you nowhere.
Would an enlightened being be concerned with such idolatry and rituals that have virtually no meaning? You can see in his eyes he knows its all a bunch of nothing and yet he tolerates it. he is such a buddhist, not an enlightened one.
@quinsedlethorpid I wasn't referring to you...since you asked & try to understand(i hope this is your Motivation). How meaningful something is depends on the view of the watcher, that's something everybody has to look inside him- or herself. The nature of mind is going beyond personal perspective or Tradition. Buddha made it very clear, that what he teaches is a tool to understanding and truth,
but not understanding and truth in itself, since this goes beyond thoughts.Again...
...again: It's not about the "thing" but what that "thing" points out to...the answer lies in us & helps to dismantle the illusion of an identification. You're right about unattachment, not only to things, but to everything including the own biographical self.Selfconscious people recognize themselves as not unattached & these Statues & Rituals are skillful means to support unattachment.
We need to understand the tools and why, as well as how they are used.
@agnostoatomo Are you referring to me when you say "For someone who can't understand that, it may be just some superstitious cult" ? I'm just making an observation you don't need to talk down to me or make assumptions that I don't understand the nature of mind. I'm merely stating it's an object no more meaningful than a cross, dollar sign, or a turd. These "things" or states you "talk" about are far beyond words and symbols. Buddhists and Hindu writings stress unattachment from things.
@quinsedlethorpid No i don't say it's stupid to believe in the illusion of money. What i'm saying is that although Money on one hand is an illusion, on the other Hand manipulates our "Reality".Symbols have a certain power over us brainwashed & unawakened people. We need strong Antidotes on all sensoric levels available. The whole Display with statues etc. is a freedom processing form of countereducation towards our innermost potential...a form of freedom pedagogy if you want...
For someone who is enlightened, everything is a display of Buddhahood, but since we're too ignorant to incarnate our innermost potential, we may see this as a theory, or not even that.
For someone trained in Vajrayana, this object can even teach on multiple levels in an instant, just by remembering the studied (& experienced)knowledge. It can even make us remember the true nature of mind in an instant. For someone who can't understand that, it may be just some superstitious exotic cult.
@agnostoatomo I know what you're trying to say but at the same time you are saying that a statue is "displaying buddhahood" and my point is an inanimate object can't display enlightenment or >teach (ie: the declaration of independence) and i think you are saying it's stupid to believe in money since it's just ink on paper and I'm with you there :)
