A walkaround looking at the birdlife following a 1080 poison drop in the Copland Valley in South Westland in 2004. Heaps of birds and a great variety of species present. These are a few on video ending with a morepork recorded on a minidisc using a high frequency microphone.

Biodegradable 1080 is used to protect birds and their habitat because it can selectively kill possums and rats, and, create a bykill of stoats. These are introduced pest mammals in New Zealand.

  • if it dosnt affect birds why did d.o.c remove the breading kiwis from okarito forrest before they droped 1080 in the kiwi sancury? and why was it that 7 out of the 10 keas monitered during that 1080 drop died of 1080 poisoning? you know hitler would be proud of the proper gander that is being spread by d.o.c and the polititions that own the company that imports the poison! look it up! its all public knowledge.

  • @StonedStill in reality no breeding kiwi were removed from Okarito. Eggs have been removed from the kiwi sanctuary for many years as part of a breeding programme to boost the population. Kea are killed by possums and stoats, are you concerned about that fact? You should be because the same research that showed you that 7 kea died is also showing you that there are potential benefits to be gained by using 1080 to kill possums, rats and stoats.

  • @KaylinJH NZ does have land mammels, deer pigs goats chamios tahr wapiti and they are all in LOW numbers already, go out in the bush and try find any of these mammels that are in high numbers or native bush that is in danger from over population............ tell me when u have found an area in need of a 1080 drop please

  • @TrakaBat Unfortunately the 500 character limited response doesn't allow for detail in this. It only gives the internet know-nothings more power.

  • @dodlord - you have made some very good points. Thank you.

  • @StonedStill

You're telling the very people who work with 1080, and in 1080 areas, and themselves hunt in 1080 areas, that they have no idea? Yet you yourself have all the answers - when you can't even string together a coherent sentence?

No offence - but the absence of an antidote for 1080, means nothing to the effectiveness of it when used as a pest control agent in New Zealand. What do you think of the antidote for cyanide (dying in 120 seconds?) Does that register with you?

  • @gunnaterry because its perhaps the only country with no land mammals, and since thats what the poison targets it makes sense to use it. Its not ideal, but you need to make a choice. either its two islands devoid of bird life and full of nothing but possums and rats, or you do the best you can to save them. Can you answer why it is that most of the 1080 opponents are hunters?

  • @pwtmusic they wont have things to go hunt on weekends

  • @StonedStill that is simply not true. The correct number is seven out of 37. In other words 81% survival. The same research is showing that kea are suffering a higher death rate from predators. Why aren't you concerned about that?

  • @pwtmusic you have no idea.. it kills everything.. here in my town d.o.c monitered 10 native kea..

known to be the most intelegent bird on the planet! they killed 7 out of that 10 that had tracking collars on. and thats only what they were monitering. the 1080 poison had an anti bird repellnet in it aswell.. your stupid to think it dosnt kill everything! there is no known antidote for 1080 poisoning.. where they drop the baits are in along the waterways
