I sailed on SSUS in 1962. It is a shame to see her in this condition. I was hoping she could live another life as a luxury hotel or maybe go back to sea as a liner. She is our flagship, do we have to lose everything that is a symbol of how we used to be? :(

Wonderful video but to clarify the ship should not have loose plates. Her insurance via Star/NCL Cruises is pretty stringent..she has a measuring device on her bridge that will identify a list of the hull and I've been told it measures the ship on an even keel. I know rain water has accumulated in certain places..but nothing that will jeopardize the ship and that water is dispelled by her current caretakers. From her current owners I have been told her hull retains 95% of its strength since 1952

I bet if they rebuilt her to seaworthyness that she'd even smoke todays ships

Too bad Ocean LIners have difficulty turning a profit as Cruise Ships, the designs now are for upward decking to fit as many paying travelers as possible.

cant say the same for her sister

why dosent someone fix her and give her a new paint job

im not too sure if it's true but someone told me she is now a wreck somewere, & broke up when they were towing her somewhere? not sure though

@Abricialio Reading the history of this ship. It was fitted with a power plant, that is, or was secret. The ship was to run fast, and the technology was never let out, or sold to a foreign power... Even though they removed the interior, because it contained asbestos. The ship was kept for reasons like that.. As far as I am concerned. They should had left the interior alone. People have found that the asbestos is okay, as long as it is not disturbed.

I just saw a story today on CBS News Sunday Morning and what a beautiful old ship. I would love to see it be redone and become the National Treasure that she used to be. Perhaps it could be turned into a museum shared by all Americans. Thank you for the video.

JHStealth,
I sometimes work at the location as a contractor. You would need a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) to be allowed at any US. seaport today, including this one.

They were on board the other day to run the bilge pumps. I talked to the guy and he said that there was nothing left inside except the engines. It has been gutted thoroughly. He also said that it would be far cheaper to build a new ship than to retrofit this one to sea-worthyness again. He felt that it was waiting to be scrapped. Sad to hear that.

Wonderful video. Thanks so much for the views. Do you work there that you were able to get in next to it? Everything was gated when we were there.

I sometimes am at that location for work. I would love to go on board and video tape one day, but I don't know if that will be possible.
