This short video clip shows the intense fire that killed 14 firefighters on Storm King Mountain on July 7th 1994. The wildland fire moved up the hill, trapping the firefighters who attempted to use their fire resistant shelters, but to no avail. This fire began July 3rd as the result of a lightening strike and was almost contained to 50 acres, when high winds fed the fire and pushed it to over 2000 acres. May heroic efforts occured on that day with several fire agencies responding to help both the fallen firefighters and the residents in harms way. As of that date, this fire was the greatest loss of firefighters lives since a 1937fire in Yellowstone National Park took the lives of 17 heros.

I had just finished my WFF Type 2 exam & step test the day Storm King blew up. Skookum, the company I was working for then, had crews in region 5&6 and just as I got home from class I got my first fire call to a fire in Klamath Falls, Oregon. On the way to the fire we found out that 9 of the 14 who were killed in Colorado were from the Prineville Hot Shot Crew.
