@recolsmix This place is cracked. Some guy got the arse on because I didn't use Castrol and now there's a problem with changing the o-rings!!! Jesus.

What oil do you use?

@ToooBusyLookingGood This is a 'PD' engine and needs oil which meets VW 505.01 standard (not sure if this has been superseded). The cheapest place to buy from was VW themselves and it's branded 'Quantum'. Do a Google search for 'VW PD 505.01' and you'll get the picture :-)

I have a Golf 2005 2.0 TDI. Using a similar extractor pump. Has anyone tried removing the sump plug after using a pump to see if there's any or much oil left? Some I think would be good to see just how effective they are. I mean if they leave half a liter or more is probably not worth using.

@davoidd My recommendation would be to try it for yourself and draw your own conclusions. By knowing how much was in before the change and how much is in the extractor afterwards you can work out how much is still left in.

The oil that usually is prescribed for the VW is castrol edge Fully synthetic 5w30 although 5w 40 for higher miles engines...don't use Dino oil it sludges up the engine and shortens engine life!

@APSPROP If that's your preferred brand, go for it. Can't be bothered with Castrol's 4L bottles and it's cheaper over the counter from VW themselves for a 5L.

Use a screwdriver to remove the O rings it's so much easier and your less likely to stab your finger.

@APSPROP Agreed, those little driver bits were a hassle. The video doesn't really capture it but it wasn't much above freezing and my fingers had long since stopped working properly!
