Boy!!! Rolling on the Floor laughing (ROFL) was coined after seeing this video, i think. But yeah, it appropriately portrays the inhuman nature of work in mass production factories. Charlie Chaplin is God
Chaplin message here was a warning that factory work, and mass production of cars, radios, TV's would change the way Americans lived. They would spend all their time trying to earn money to buy the things they felt they needed to enjoy life. Before long they felt that "things" were what life was all about.. 100 years later, we still treat others this way: cell-phones, i-pods, twitter, We are too busy to be with our friends and families. Instead we e-mail them. Chaplin saw the future!
I dont think it was so much a warning as it was a refection of the things he saw that were already in place. This film was released in 1936 but the industrial revolution had already taken place the 1800's and mass production really took of in the 1920's with automobiles. I believe chaplins focus here was that work began to dehumanize people. Working on a assembly line limited peoples creativity and abilities to one simple task over and over. But I agree with you on what you said about "things"
that's not his message... the movie was made during the great depression. the simple message was...I have a job, I lost my job, but tommorrow the sun will shine, so "smile" Charlie wanted his character to relate to the audience's plight.
Oh, I see. Well, I guess is apparent that the demented slaving and repetitive use of machinery in relationship with the workers drove him crazy, then he exploded.
