Magnum Vexata Dark Interlude is an ambient darkwave experimental form of music that has been composed as a longer, more contemplative structure. The work uses quite a bit of external ring modulation. This is ring modulation applied after a sequence has been recorded within the recording software. This has been an interesting exercise as there are unpredictable results as to how the final output will sound, or how musically interesting it will be. In using the software, the "modulate" option is chosen. This multiplies the two input sources hence, ring modulation. The creation of the music begins with a rhythm track ring-modulated with one of the sequences created by the Korg R3 synthesizer. This ring-modulated track was then slowed down by 200% to create a "blowing-like" noise effect. The next track was an alternate Korg R3 sequence ring-modulated with a lower frequency sine-wave and slowed by 200% to create a very dark and atonal gong-like bass atmosphere. The next additive sequences comprise four separate ring-modulated tracks blended together by long cross-fades. Each separate track is a sequence also slowed by 200% to cut the tempo in half and to lower the pitch by the same degree. All of the original 95 bpm tracks were slowed within the sound editing software and mixed down to form an ambient foundation. This mixed down track underwent stereo expansion to broaden the stereo field of the sound sources. Added to this were melodic sequences created by the TS-404 software synthesizer and slowed by 200%. One sequence was ring-modulated to create a very metallic and clangorous "plucking" timbre. Stereo effect was achieved by delayed double-tracking and panning the two tracks left and right. Each of these new sequences were blended together by very slow crossfades. A rising and falling track was created by generating sinewaves and by frequency-modulating the initial and final stages of the pitch envelope. The signal was stereo-delayed with reverb added to create an unearthly electronic rising and falling chorus-like shrill, reminiscent of early science-fiction electronic music sound effects. A short rhythm sequence was positioned at a strategic point on the timeline to build tension and slowly release. All these elements were then mixed down to the final stereo master. The result is an eerie and atmospheric darker composition comprising multiple sequences blending together with many varied examples of external ring modulation and slowed down to completely transform the emotion and feel of the finished work. The composition has a dream-like quality as melodic and atonal or resonant timbres combine to create interesting textures and soundscapes. The visuals were inspired by the EMS Spectron Video Synthesizer, and attempting to emulate some of the linear patterns created by this classic video instrument. Hard-edge and softer forms modulate and transform across the screen with multiple layers superimposed upon one another to create animated and dynamic fields of motion.

The visuals are excellent and match the EMS Spectron perfectly. Loved the ring modulated sounds . . .
