I just saw this tonight (October) and found the effort to be excellent. The singing of my National anthem in such a pure and non-self-indulgent manner was an emotional moment for me. The Star Spangled Banner hasn't been performed any better than this in many years. Perhaps some of the Rock stars and Blues singers should take note.

While I do think there's something to be said for simplicity, I do like some inflections unto it. I feel it allows the singer to be more expressive.

That said, I cannot stand runs every second salable, I mean, are they having a vocal seizure or something.

Most national anthems are banal texts set to terrible music, but at least America's does truly represent the values of the country:

1. The music is clumsy, loud, dull, and - having been stolen from a sloppy English drinking song - unoriginal.

2. Like the nation that adopted it, the text is all about explosions.

3. It's an incoherent mess of content-free self aggrandizement, but that hardly matters given that surveys show that over 99% of Americans are ignorant of of 75% of it.

Try listening without your hand in your pants. The words "leaden, abrasive, and sarcastic" might come to mind. Unless of course your'e hearing impaired, in which case I apologize.
