A heartbreaking scene from Gaetano Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia. Act II: M'odi? ah! m'odi. Montserrat Caballe debuting at La Scala in her signature role, 1970. Bel canto in its purest and most touching form.

  • I am a huge Caballe fan, and there is no denying the voice sounds remarkable here and the high pianissimi are splendid, but I prefer Edita Gruberova in this aria. I so wonder what Callas would have sounded like.

  • Uma senhora, uma SENHORA

  • The purity of voice - the technical control - the intensity of feeling ... all astounding.

  • When I hear a performance like this my thoughts go straight to the composer. I wonder if Donizetti imagined that his music would sound like this. This is artistry in its highest form. Magnificent!

  • An erotic rendition! She conveys eeriness, love and sheer beauty: magnificent!
