"All that happens is they throw money at it blindly without improving anything." Not sure about this statement. There is a big push for technology that controls the public such as on the grid tech. RFID, Smart Meters, GPS (now required in Brazil), backup cameras (which can tie into GPS,U.S. required 2014) cell phone, wireless, cloud computing, etc. How about testing for real safety? Instead we get deregulation.

Oh well, you know you gotta go to school, so you can grow up and get a job. The economies needs worker bees, not another lazy slob. The nation needs a workforce, and schools have to provide... So you gotta get up! And go to school, so you can take your place with pride.

School is like society - crap but it sort of holds together.
I don't think that the desire to have a strong economy is purely competitive, people at Oxford might forget that for a lot of people being an 'artsy fartsy' type wouldn't be an option even if it was taught at school. If most people don't contribute real practical skills, starvation and homelessness would follow.
