low range wouldnt have held him on that, he needed to use breaks

was just about to say "nah thats not steep" then it was. Oh, low range dif lockers on and1st gear and only touch your brakes, let the engine take you down.....

@churd243 the speed would have been very slow in low range, first gear, no need for the brakes.

@philiphuynh defenders have transmission brakes. he would have snapped a propshaft or smashed the gearbox up.
