By all accounts (including his own), President Barack Obama had a great time during his recent trip to France. And elite opinion at places ranging from Newsweek to The Economist to the Brookings Institution is urging Obama to make America more like France and Europe.

Should the United States become the next France, a land of high taxes, regulation, and government spending? And, not uncoincidentally, comparatively low economic growth?

In "Obama's French Toast: Just Say Non," Sorbonne-trained economist Veronique de Rugy of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University argues that embracing the French way would be nothing less than a train wreck, leaving Americans with fewer jobs and less disposable income.

"Obama's French Toast" is a co-production of Reason.tv and the Center for Freedom & Prosperity (http://freedomandprosperity.org). Written and produced by Meredith Bragg and Nick Gillespie. Approximately three minutes long.

  • Comparing disposable incomein France and the Us is utterly meaningless since Americans have to pay so many things from their pockets frenchmen get for free in return for paying higher taxes. Substract college tuition fees for your children and healthcare from your american income and you'll be close to the french one.

  • Wow... Such brilliant demagogy and bullshit, both in video and comments, I'm astounded.

Per capita income is a single data, it doesn't mean anything when studying the way society works, and how human beings lives in and through it.

Most european countries invest parts of their economy in order to provide a global high quality of life, even if you're unhealthy or experiencing issues out of control.

And we do love it that way actually, despite the biased bullshits of people like powell789.

  • "I wanna thank..."

    Ugh.

  • Obama is a buffoon & his staff is totally incompetent. The product of Affirmative Action. An abysmal failure in every endeavor. This half breed is an embarrassment to America.

  • The U.S. population increases much faster than the French population, so it is normal that GDP growth is stronger because Americans make more children and have more immigration. But if were looking at the growth of the past 10 years per capita, growth is better in France than the United States. In addition to U.S. growth is due to the fact that company and households in the U.S. live on credit and are heavily indebted, unlike the French who have the highest savings rates in the world...

  • Not anymore! because now the USA has a total debt above 55 trillions just about of 148,000 per capita.

  • Hahahaha i love this... ReasonTV spends so much time finding fringe elements overseas...

  • @FiveofHearts1 Thanks you, i studied commerce. a small example, before there was only one fixed line operator managed by the government today there are several operators with different offers.
