WEBSITE: http://www.teachertube.com 8th Graders at Pawnee School learned about gravity and inertia on Friday. They built a series of steps using textbooks boxes crates and boards. Then through trial and error successfully achieved a great endeavorthey made a Slinky toy travel down the steps to the floor The Slinky toy is made similar to a spring however the coiled wire is flat. Slinkys contain potential energy. The potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy as the Slinky is pulled toward Earth by the force of gravity. The inertia of the toy keeps it at rest storing its potential energy. The higher up the toy is placed the more potential energy it has. Theoretically the toy would keep stepping down as long as the toy is within a strong enough gravitational field and forces such as friction air resistance and variables such as torque twisty motion did not interfere. Our toy went from a height of about one meter and negotiated six steps to land on the floor. The students also learned how the Slinky is manufactured how the Slinky behaves in weightlessness and how engineers made all this fun possible
