I am Japanese and think there is some kind of misunderstandings here.
They might look open or casual, but that is not to make you feel bad in this sad stories. There is no big debate of pro-choice and prolife like in the US, but women feel guilty. There are temples full of tombs for aborted babies. I think guilty for the aborted baby is the main feelings they have more than shame or others.
