In Pilsen, the hipsters come out after two

I spent a few hours walking around, driving around, and hanging around in Pilsen earlier today, in search of the changing demographic that some have reported there.

I saw little visible evidence of change in any part of Pilsen, although I did chat at some length with Pilsen native Robert Martinez, who reports that the changes in Pilsen are real and significant, and that the eastern part of Pilsen is seeing an influx of younger people.

are you aware that Pilsen was originally a large Czechoslovakian neighborhood with Polish and other eastern European immigrants? For nearly all of the history of this neighborhood has it been this way. Your statement makes no sense at all, saying someone doesn't belong there. The identities of neighborhoods change constantly. Such as Pilsen changing to a Mexican neighborhood in the 70's and staying that way since than.

the mexicans can't move into a all-white neighborhood though. Non-white-asian minorities in chicago are all concentrated into small areas. When a class of people start entering it obviously creates some tension. Besides, the hipsters/yuppies in pilsen make sure to live apart from the majority of the neighborhoods residents.

You need to use some video editing software. Just walking one block in Pilsen with the cap off your camera does not give much of an idea of the place, and that ice cream truck? I wonder how the drivers of those things stay sane. Now I'll be hearing "Turkey in the Straw" in my dreams.

In my experience Chicago gets much cuter, gayer, and gentrified the closer you get to the loop. Not surprising really. Yuppies kind of disgust me but hey, they're people too.

Isn't 21st and Western technically "Little Village" (South Lawndale), not Pilsen?

White folk who fear gangs are dumb. If you're reasonably street smart (don't start shit, no conspicuous displays of wealth, etc) you aren't likely to get hurt by a gang. You're more likely get in a car accident (in any neighborhood) than get shot on the West/South side. Also, so what if you get jacked once in a while? A stolen wallet or cell phone is a small loss compared to car accidents, rent, etc.
