@imrational :3 people's naive utopian beliefs about how and why Market Darwinism is a good thing and what a free market does is like a religion. Kind of like the naive utopianism of communists who put too much faith in the intellect, reciprocity, kindness and cooperativeness of people.

Darwin was catholic. When he took his famous voyage aboard the Beagle he began to see evidence against the idea of a creator. One of the small things that made him atheist was the observation of parasitic wasps lying eggs in the body of a living spider. He realised that a benevolent and loving creator wouldn't create such a monstrous form of larval growth, let alone make multiple variations of reproduction and birth.

It's like Darwinism has become a fundamentalist religion - can't question it, challenge it - it's fact

Evolution isn't dawinism-- that's the theory that biological form and function are created incrementally due to random mutation and natural selection. I think that idea has had it's day, personally.
I think some people *do* have an ideological commitment to darwinism, but they're not all atheists. Most are materialists, but some are theistic evolutionists.

Yes and no. I think there is some truth to it. Unfortunately, people seem to ignore the market's influence on government, affecting the "free-ness of it".
