Simple gifts was not written by Aaron Copland. The tune is a Shaker tune written by Elder Joseph.

@deanna624 The song was largely unknown outside of Shaker communities until it became world famous thanks to its use in Aaron Copland's score for Martha Graham's ballet Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Copland used "Simple Gifts" a second time in 1950 in his first set of Old American Songs for voice and piano, which was later orchestrated. (*Quote from Wikipedia) This version, as far as I know is Copland's arrangement

@deanna624 But you are correct, "Simple Gifts" was originally written by "Elder Joseph" while he was at the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine in 1848. This information was not noted on my sheet music from which I studied this song. A friend emailed me this music and wanted to hear how I would sing it, after listening to a number of other songs I uploaded, but on the positive side, as long as people like me study the music and sing it, it is heard by more other people
