The pressure is on for South Korean students today. They're taking the national college entrance exams. The exams will determine where the students will study, but could also affect their careers and even who they might marry.

On Thursday, South Korean students took their all-important College Scholastic Aptitude Test. They play a strong role in determining each student's future... from determining which college they attend, to their careers and even marital prospects.

[Chung Hyun-koo, High School Student]:
"I came here to support my seniors who are taking this important exam. We want to give them energy and wish them well in the exams."

Inside the classrooms, students waited nervously as examiners distributed the test papers. Cell phones, MP3 players and all electronic devices were strictly prohibited.

In the days leading up to the exam, most temples and churches in South Korea were crowded with parents praying for their children to do well on the exams.

[Yoo Jin-yeon, Parent]:
"I believe my son would do his best during the exam as he did so during preparations. I hope my son will have a good result. Way to go, my son!"

[Chun Lin, Parent]:
"I don't want to put pressure. There's nothing more I can do as a parent but to pray. I will pray sincerely during the whole exam."

The test is the most important exam for students, as academic achievement holds great weight in Korean society both socially and economically.

Students begin preparing for the exams as early as elementary school.

From the roughly 712,000 students taking the test this year, only half will get accepted into what's considered a well-known university.

  • @MotoscuterZ

They are the people your children will compete with, how do you like your chances ?

  • "WAY TO GO MY SUN" who says that. I know my parents never did lol.

  • @CNTRI715 but neo-cons said the opposite "we are # 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" hahhahha

  • "Only half" of the 712,000 students taking the exam will get into well-known colleges?

That beats the U.S. Half of American students don't get into well-known colleges.

Tell the Koreans who don't get into top schools there to just go to grad school in the U.S. They'll get rich over here.

  • This sucks but man I thought school here in US was hard. But it pays off they are super intelligent.

  • No wonder these countries are beating the US academically....
