What can I say about this wonderful, wonderful track? I LOVE IT!!!! I always have, ever since I first heard it when I was a teenager (er, 30 years ago?!).

Every now and then, I have sat down and tried to play along to it. I always speeded-up, always got it wrong, never got the accents right and generally made a mess of it! But I have always had a blast trying!

I could not resist trying to do a half decent version for YouTube, and I think I have just about got on camera what I wanted. In this first video (there is another to come, with out-takes) I don't play the outro properly and there are some other bits that went wrong. Overall though, it is a 'nearly'!

I have to admit that I over-play the two 'drummy' bits! I guess every drummer would want to stuff this bit full of enormous Neil Peart Rush-type mega fills, and I am no exception!!!! It seems to be begging for it!

Unfortunately (a) I am certainly not Mr. Peart and (b) my double bass drum work has never been my strong-point and (c) the accoustics seem to have resulted in the very fast 'Peart-doubles' sounding like singles. Pants, pants and double pants. You will just have to believe me when I say that I DID play doubles, and they DID come out right! It actually sounds better on the second video, if you watch that.

Very hard to get the music loud enough on this vid - the fantastic sounds created by the rest of the band in this track are hard to pick out - I urge anyone who has not heard this track before to go get it - it is awesome stuff, especially that fiddle. Epic!

If you enjoy this, then watch the other vid I have done of it - with out-takes! Look on the 'Other' playlist for it!

  • Dude! Where is your Radar love video?!! That was my fav!

  • @IcelandicBeast It is in my 'Others' playlist, or you can find it in the 'My Best Uploads' playlist :-)

  • Working on this song myself, have to say, wow, you did a spectacular job and kind of demystified some of the licks. Still... more complicated than I would have thought.

  • @thelittlesthobbit Thank you!

It has to be said that at the end I do overplay it - the original does not have the 'big fills' that I do. I always wished that the drummer had done them, 'cos it seemed the right thing to do to me, so now that I just about have the ability to play what I always heard in my head, I did it on this video :-)

You may be interested in my more recent recording of this, using my new Roland drums - a better camera angle and better sound - have a look on my channel.

  • Great job on the drum cover. It sounded very good. I am impressed. Thumbs up from me dude!

  • @readyeddy101 I thank you :-)

  • Thanks bro!

  • @jouxplan Ah right, yeah. I might learn the GH3 one sometime lol but your cover was magnifico! :)

  • @Magnesiur I don't know, actually! I got this version off a 'Best Of Charlie Daniel's Band Compilation cd. It is how I remember it though - I am 46 and seem to recall it went like it is here!

Not sure I would base much on what is on Guitar Hero 3 though :-)

  • @dvideto Hey, thank you! Mixing? Very crude actually. I do not use drum mics, no mixing desk, nothing. Just play my cd player very loud, drum as quietly as I can with my Flix sticks (not wooden sticks), and the camcorder records the whole lot in one go. Pretty amazing, eh? It's a Panasonic GS300 camcorder on this vid. I recently up-graded to a HD Panasonic EK300 or something - even better audio quaility. All my vids (except Me & Sarah Jane) are recorded as simply as this :-)
