CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Cedar Rapids police say Brandon Poulson, 19, of Swisher, is the man who threw a dead cat through a McDonald's drive-through window.

Poulson is accused of throwing a dead male black domestic shorthair through the window at the McDonald's, 8905 Runway Ct. SW, near The Eastern Iowa Airport and Interstate 380, on Dec. 19.

Cedar Rapids police on Thursday cited and released Poulson on a charge of simple assault for throwing the cat at Eric Trachta, 21, of Cedar Rapids, the McDonald's employee on the other side of the open window.

Prosecutors on Friday charged him formally with simple assault and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors. The trespass charge is for him entering the business's property to commit an assault and to harass an employee, court records show.

Initial reports said three people were in the car that pulled into the drive-through.

"They saw this dead cat (in the area); his buddies dared him to pick it up," said Cedar Rapids police Lt. Kenneth Washburn. It was "his idea to throw it through the window."

Police said they solved the case after someone in the fast food restaurant identified someone in the vehicle. Police chased that lead and identified Poulson as the thrower, police said.
