...So, to continue the adventure... Nee-san, I, and one other participant enter the DaigaCon AMV contest. The staffer in charge of the contest contacts us, saying that he would like to have an equal number of AMVs per contestant so that they can run them in rounds. Problem being, Nee-san entered three videos. This means I have less than one day to come up with another video. I think, "I don't have a chance! It took me six hours to do the last half of my Loki video! I can't possibly have it done by this evening!"

The solution? Use footage that doesn't require much editing.

The now-defunct Hirameki's Animamundi: Dark Alchemist is a horrible game. Dreadful, even. Practically untenable. (It's easy to see why the company tanked.) But it does have the advantage of being composed entirely of still images, which means all I needed to add was timing and effects.

The video was completed in just over five hours, including breaks to do laundry and eat lunch. I think it came out fairly well, all things considered! :)

VIDEO: Animamundi: Dark Alchemist
AUDIO: "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni" by Shimamiya Eiko (OP theme of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni).
TOOLS: Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Photoshop.

  • I never said "it doesn't deserve to be called a game." If you'll refer to my earlier comment, I merely said that it would be more appropriate to call it a talking slideshow.

Some scenarios did drag on for an hour, especially when you had 3 or 4 chapters go by without any plot choices (i.e., Ruler's Curse/Outbreak of War/Civil Strife/Luminescent Blessing). Whether or not you're offered a choice in a chapter depends on previous choices, so some paths go for a very long time without any options.

  • I think your hatred for the game comes from the fact that it's called a "game". :P

All the same, lovely video, and great work. You weave a story for those who have never read the story, and though it's a different one from the game's story I think it makes more sense than the real one. XP

  • You have a point; if they called it a "talking slideshow," it would be more appropriate. ^_^ Thank you!

  • O_o Um... Animamundi: Dark Alchemist IS a game. The genre is called Visual Novel - it's MEANT to be like a choose your own adventure story with pictures and, if you're lucky, voice. The irony is, the game that the anime the opening song is from was ALSO a visual novel and plays similarly to Animamundi, only with a LOT more reading.

:| Kids nowadays have no patience for games that don't have flashy graphics and battle scenes. Tch.

  • /laughs at being called a "kid"/

Right. When I was a kid, the games I played ran in BASIC and required command lines for every action (such as it was). "Flashy graphics and battle scenes" aren't exactly at issue here.

I have no problem with visual novels as a format; some have good stories (as we've seen with the popularity of Higurashi, etc.). But when I have to let the game run for MORE THAN AN HOUR in between being offered choices... that's not a game. That's a screensaver.

  • I like this. A LOT. XD And, yeah... Animamundi's hard to get through sometimes. But I love the plot to pieces, and the art is just beautiful. This is a beautiful AMV, though.

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it.

  • The "kids nowadays" thing is me trying to sound like a grumpy old person.

For me, you're insulting the game for basically being too story-intensive with not enough places to make choices. It's still a game, it's just a very linear one. I would understand more if you said this wasn't your "kind" of game, not "it doesn't deserve to be called a game!". Higurashi is even more linear - with little to no choices throughout.

I don't remember any of Animamundi's scenarios being that long. O_o

  • i found it it was at the mall at was at the mall at a really good price and the good news was they had it 4 2 weeks!

  • I preordered it from the manufacturer before its release, but it's out of print now. You can probably find it on clearance somewhere.
