A special video tour of USS Constitution's Orlop Deck and Ship's Hold, a storage space deep within the ship not often seen by the public due to the large number of visitors to the free ship's tours offered year-round. The Constitution's service demanded she make extended cruises lasting up to 6 months, and she needed to store food, fresh water and supplies to maintain her and her crew throughout this period. The Orlop (or "overlapping") deck and hold provided room for all this, and feature a view of massive "diagonal riders", timber ribs which helped her keep her keel from arcing up in the middle from the weight of the guns on the decks above.

Berthed in Massachusetts's historic Charlestown Navy Yard, USS Constitution is America's Ship of State and the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Details on the ship, her crew, and her free public tours can be found at her website:

  • not really showing us anything except this guy yapping away..how bout a tour with no yapping.

  • @prostockgirl In truth, there is not a terrible lot to see in this part of the ship in the present day, and many camera angles would show modern fittings and equipment such as airhandling vents and pumps. But perhaps more looking around would have helped convey the shape and size of the space.

She's the oldest commissioned warship still afloat...all others of her age are in dry dock.

  • USS constitution isnt the oldest, there are WAY older ships than her

  • Not sure about after the refit in the '90s but 30 years ago, when the wife was assigned there the orlop deck held bunks for the duty watch (about 12) plus coffee maker, bug juice machine and a boombox/radio

  • the constitution has also had people killed aboard her and yes she has her ghosts
