L'âge des ténèbres is a famous french canadian movie. The english version of it is Days of darkness. This scene is important in the movie. The girl on the boat is the main character's imaginary mistress. Rufus represent how the main character sees himself in the imaginary world.
Also Rufus grew up in Montréal and he speaks/understands french and he made his own voice in the french version.
