Gateway of India is an iconic Indian monument, situated in South Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Maharashtra state. This 26 metre high arch made of basalt was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay. Half the folks standing in front of the gateway are there to hustle you. Want an easy way to get touts to walk away? Pull out a video camera. They don't want to be filmed and pretty much leave you alone. The gateway is pretty cool - but Elephanta Island is the real gem in that part of Bombay.
