A hairy caterpillar of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar japonica, family Lymantriidae) was found on the leaf of Japanese sweet shrub (Clethra barbinervis, family Clethraceae). It sit still on a cluster of small white cocoons of the parasitoid wasp (Apanteles liparidis?, family Braconidae) whose eggs had been laid inside the gypsy moth caterpillar. And a tiny wasp was suspiciously hanging around the cocoons (just a coincidence?). The host caterpillar looked dying and could not walk at all, but sometimes shook its head vigorously as if guarding the parasitoid's cocoons. Early-August 2009 in Japan. One yen coin (20mm in diameter) was placed as a scale reference. I collected the cocoon specimens and brought them home in order to let them eclose. (to be continued)

  • I saw this in the garden in my place recently.I took the caterpiller off and burnt all the wasp coccoons, burnt all to a crisp.Didn't want too many stinging wasps around. At least the caterpiller can grow into a beautiful butterfly.Sweet revenge.

  • Thank you for good observation. :)

  • that's so sad =[
