  • There were only three survivors of the Akron, and here they appear to report the disaster.

  • The other two survivors besides Commander Wiley were Moody Irwin and Richard Deal. This was Deal's second escape from death, the first was when, at the last minute, he was taken off the list of crew for the USS Shenandoah (ZR-1)'s last flight eight years before. Wiley, too, would cheat the reaper a second time two years later when the USS Macon (ZRS-5) went down off the California coast. Thanks for posting this.
