Alexander Godunov, Corsaire variation, 1982.
Looks like that was his favorite part, he once said he'd love to dance Corsaire when he were 50. Alas, that never happened.
For the first time he danced a pas de deux from Le Corsaire, partnered with Lyudmila Smorgachova, at the first round of the II Moscow International Ballet Competition in 1973.
He won a Gold Medal back then.

THE WORLD TO DANCE IN
Dancing lion. Lion dancer.
Whirling round and round the world,
In the blast of trumpets and fanfares,
Big and brash and powerful,
Abandoned blond mane flying.
Charismatic, spectacular, flamboyant.
Whimsical, guileless, ironic.
Moody, brooding, haunted.
Lunatic, perfectionist, obsessive.
Lonely? Afraid?
He drank too much.
A flame burning high and bright, briefly.
Left are ashes in the sea.
The Pacific ocean separates
California and Sakhalin.

  • I believe it's fair to say the Russians are the best dancers in the world. I don't think any tap dancer or jazz blah blah touches them. This is a Russian thing.

  • @brelfan in classical ballet, yes, no doubt. But I wouldn't apply this to the dance in general.

  • when was this filmed?

    isnt he a movie star?

  • @urranuss It was filmed in 1982.

He was a great international ballet star snd then a Hollywood movie star.

  • @magnumSuper yeah i know he was a dancer but wasnt to sure if he was an actor too..i think he was in that movie die hard no?

another dancer who defected to the west during the cold war

  • @urranuss Yes, he was in Die Hard as Karl, a blond beast.

    "I want blood!" - that's him :-)

  • @brelfan I totally agree!!!

  • @brelfan Nope, sorry. Nowadays classical ballet has a lot of dancers from US, South America, England, etc. There is no real powerhouse of Dance like in the eighties and early nineties. Best dancers are from all over the globe.

  • yo le vi en el film Esta casa es una ruina, en el que su papel era un director de orquesta que estaba como una cabra, personaje divertidísimo, como toda la película. Fué un grandísimo bailarín del BOLSHOI,

  • He so handsome! RIP Alexander Godunov!

  • OMG , , , he is SO good.

  • Je suis heureuse de voir et revoir vos merveilleuses archives savamment regroupées !
