@Relayer6a Yeah I know man. The past is the past but I've always felt this was the best line up they ever had. Too bad egos and musical differences got in the way.

I got to see the group just once live with Bill Bruford playing. It was a moment of inspiration that will forever be with me. He did fit Yes's music perfectly and the band wasn't the same without him. Alan White had some big shoes to fill when he joined but after a couple of tours he had worked himself into the fabric rather nicely. Still, Bill Bruford and those first 4 Yes albums he played on were an inspiration for all of us who came after him.

@Relayer6a I have to agree that I was heartsick when I found out Bill had departed. I thought his playing on Fragile and Close to the Edge was some of the best work he's ever done.

@bergerdrum I prefer Brufords drumming to Whites. Where it is applicable to the music , I feel that Brufords drumming tends to be more musical than Whites.
It's ok man . We all have opinions. I respect yours too

Truly the most classic YES line up is with Bruford and Wakeman.

Alan's more than "just a drummer" (god, I hate that terminology). He's also a proficient keyboard player and percussionist beyond the drum set, and a writer/arranger. One small example: listen to what he made for a percussion suite in "The Ancient" from "Topographic Oceans" for example. I can't stand it when people who don't understand Alan's breadth of artistry stay up Brufod's ass (as much as I love Bruford dearly) and can't look beyond him.

It's amazing how much better Jon got later on in the 70s and beyond. I think he was behind the other guys technically in this video. He isn't singing with anywhere near as much authority as say ABWH or later.

i know and it was a GREAT replacement.

Bruford was one of the founding members of Yes
Howe only joined after departure of original guitarist Peter Banks
Bill Bruford is not a "drummer" in the sense of the word
He is an artist , a genius if you will, who added a dimension to Yes as opposed to held a beat.
This band was never the same without him.
Alan white is a fantastic "drummer"
Bill Bruford is a musical genius

Bill's great. A very large part of Yes died when he left. Not because Alan isn't really good. It's just "Bill" is missing.
