What he fails to mention is that the dictators of the region, propped up by the US, have wildly different opinions to their populations. We don't have to speculate what the populations think, there was a pretty big survey by the Brookings Institute a few months back. The majority (~70%) actually consider the US and Israel to be the greatest threat to peace, with Iran at 10%. In fact a little over 50% think that Iran obtaining a nuclear deterrent would be a stabilising force.
