Egli non riede ancora!
Oh come lunghe, eterne,
quando lungi è da me, lore mi sono!
(Prende larpa.)
Arpa che or muta giaci, vieni,
ed i miei sospiri seconda, sì,
che più veloce giunga il flebile lamento
al cor del mio fedel sullali al vento.
Non so le tetre immagini
fugar del mio pensiero
sempre dannata a gemere
allombra dun mistero:
e se di speme un pallido
raggio su me traluce,
è passeggiera luce
di lampo ingannator.
Meglio è morir! se lanima
sen voli in seno a Dio;
se il mio Corrado a piangere
verrà sul cener mio:
premio una cara lagrima
chieggo allamor soltanto,
virtù non niega il pianto
per chi moria damor.
-------------------------------------
The pirate Corrado lives on an island in the
Aegean. While he is making plans with his
lieutenant Giovanni to sail off and attack the
Muslim harbour city of Corone, his mistress,
Medora, sits alone in her room waiting for him.
She expresses her anxiety over his absence in a
doleful song, accompanying herself on a harp.
MEDORA
Still he does not return!
Oh how long an eternity
the hours seem when he is away!
(She takes up her harp.)
Come, my harp, that has lain silent, add
your voice to my sighs, so that my doleful
lament may faster reach the heart of my
faithful
lover, carried on the wings of the wind.
I cannot dispel the uneasy fantasies
of my thoughts,
condemned as I am to suffer
in the shadow of a mystery.
Even if a pale ray of hope
shines on me,
it is only the passing flash
of deceitful lightning.
Better to die! Then my soul
might fly up to Gods embrace,
and my Corrado might come
to weep over my remains.
A loving tear is the only reward
I ask for my love;
manly virtue is not denied by weeping
for one who has died for love.

P.S. I'm terribly sorry that Dural's channel is suspended, I did not mean to steal the video. I beleive this is one of the best Callas videos ever made, and It must be shared with the world... Once Dural's channel is established again, I would quietly remove this video

  • i wonder what makes you dislike the aria? is it the singing, the composition, the story ?

    and I could hardly call a "CALLAS-sung-aria" a soundtrack !!!

  • I thank you for keeping some of my videos, this one in particular was very special to me.

  • Glad you are back .... It is great having you around :)

  • I have listened to so many other singers sing this in their pristine prime, with perfect voices, and none sings it as hauntingly or beautifully as this. What an imaginative musical genius we had in Callas.

  • When Callas redorded this aria, she had become a deeply sad person, fighting to find reasons to live. Of course, her voice... was not at all what it used to be... it was in pieces, but still the most truthful and touching voice ever.

  • Ha riesumato quest'opera e la sua più nota aria... eccouno dei vari perché la Callas é lo spartiacque della lirica!

  • This is a perfect piece to show how singing could be touching in a deep sense even without a perfect voice.

    Bravo, Callas!

  • I HEARED THIS GORGEOUS ARIA IN LIKE 1984 AND I NEVER FORGOT IT ALL THESE YEARS! ALL THESE YEARS!!!!!! AND HERE IT IS THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART

  • Terrible! Her chubby cheek vocal production, are cautioned more than ever

  • @baritonebynight John Ardoin in his cover notes for this album( released as a vinyl record) says that Callas resumed study with Hildago and developed a true ppp and that her voice, was a lot steadier, but still could not take much pressure above the staff. Yes.. thats what he said, and he was one of her closest friends, so I believe that it happened.

  • @kgarmaker123 She returned to de Hildago? I didn' t know that.

  • @MariaCallasLegend Thanks! :)

  • @ezayi 1969 in PARIS!!

  • Maria Callas unübertroffen !!! Genie der Oper !!!

  • SOO beautiful!
