there is a very easy way to get there. It's off of horsepound rd. But what people dont know is, that it's also know as indian rock and turtle rock. It all depends on where you stand. If you stand in the pines half way to the stream(east) you see a turtle, the upright rock is the neck and head the long rock is the shell. If you stand to the south ... Read Moretoward the hill covered in pines, you will see what looks like an indian looking towards the stream, with feathers in his head.
If you stand to the north at the end of the long rock you will see a hawk. Go around the back and climb on the shell (watch out when i hunt there i have seen coyotes living under the rock) walk towards the upright rock, jump on the rock between them(be carefull) and you will find carvings in the stone dated back to around 300AD. a deer, fish, turtle and water. I was told when shown an old map that this was a place indians camped at when they burned and buried their dead.
If you stand in the middle of the long rock, looking straight ahead 45 degrees to the right and up on the hill across from the pond is the indian grave yard. on top of the hill between tuckers and the behr's. I was looking at buying a house on the hill and told the owner what was just behind his house and he went and got something he found...and old indian arrow head he found walking around just behind his house. It was awesome, in great shape, carved to perfection in one piece.
first look at a map just before 1960, then imagine that map looking about the same for about 220 yrs. this was all farm, no tree's, as this was a dairy farm county. Where you were, was a very old farm area, the stone chamber is were they stacked steel milk jugs to store before taking them to town and to store ice. about 100 feet from where you were is an old foundation for a farm house.
That main chamber is a favorite of mine. I visited Hawk Rock once with a group, but am not sure if I'll be able to find it again. I'd love to go back.
Any info on this site and others withen 60 miles in either direction please share with me. What a very sacred area this is indeed.
