"Families are the Reason..." puts Title V in historical context as part of the Social Security Act of 1935---a program to help mothers and children, and its expansion to include children with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Until the 1970's, chronically ill children and children with disabilities routinely lived in institutions. Families often found their role quite limited. This video acknowledges that difficult past and emphasizes the current role of families and professionals working together to build family-centered, community-based, coordinated systems of care. Dr. Merle McPherson, Chief of the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Care Needs, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, leaves us with the challenge to assure that the lessons learned by families and professionals about caring for children with special needs are effectively integrated into the managed health care environment of the future.

Good video highlighting the importance of meeting specific family and child needs. Yes, it's a delicate and complicated balance. As service providers it's a serious undertaking with serious responsibilities. A network of care can be--and often is--worse than institutional care if it's not well orchestrated. We have to remember it's not enough to try and do better; we must also do no harm in the process. Very informative video.
