My first little experiment using a steadicam I made for my iPhone4. It's not perfectly smooth, and that's more my fault than the steadicam, but it's a big improvement (and a fun project too).

Head over to www.aetherdrinker.blogspot.com to see more.

And if anyone knows the names of the Portland skaters in the video, please let me know, they deserve a lot of credit.

  • Where is this awesome skate park with a full pipe?

  • @UrbanDEV That's Pier Park in Portland Oregon. It's pretty small, and in kind of ghetto area (lots of drunks and tweakers), but still really fun.

  • Good job but you have clearly also used post-stabilization to smooth the motions further. Tell tail signs are in the subtle directional blurs that are the result of motion blur having the motion taken out, as well as the random skewing of the image to show where it has been corrected. I often do stabilization and use a type of steadicam also and know how it looks when its done. Could you show us a raw video please, before its been stabilized.

  • @duophonix Wow, good eye. Yeah, on a couple shots I did get lazy and try to fix it in post to remove some of the my slight hand shaking. I'm not very good with it so I probably went overboard (and didn't feel like going back and redoing the shot). Instead of reposting the video, I'll post another video that's a lot smoother. I didn't realize going into it how much technique is involved with even the best steadicams. I'm a lot better at it now, so it should be a better demo of the rig.

With those cams you mentioned, of course you'll get a whole lot better results, but you're missing the point. This is a fun project to try.. especially if you 'own' an iPhone4.. (if you own)..

I think it isn't worth doing this Rig if iPhone4 doesn't make good quality videos and images in the first place. Another point is that those cams cannot edit within the device, upload and do all other things iphone can do.

I bet you could text and make calls with hz30w or a-hd.

  • @Emomoz I believe you mean Irish... As its Irish

  • well, I'm liking it for the squirrel :D

  • I liked the Scotland Rock

  • I think this is pretty good, though it's not really a stedicam on a fundamental level... A steady cam uses weight to move the center of gravity down precisely to the handle attachment point (gimbal) . This has a bit too much weight (a lot, actually) at the bottom, and that causes the camera to tilt as it is flown. Sometimes that's a good effect, but generally, that's not what you want.

One difficulty is that the phone is so light. A perfect gimbal is needed and even then wind will be a pisser

  • Not enough steadicam shots to call this a steadicam demo.

  • its still shaky.

  • You should probably try and stick a little weight on to the iphone mount itself, this should make it a bit less shaky according to the guys from the Hague stabilizers, don't know if you still care though :P

  • @xLoNaDaRx Forget that I said that (I skipped the last part of the video). If anyone is as lazy as I am, song is: The rocky road to dublin - The drop kick Murphys
