@Gairlochan In regards to your comment about letting a computer take their spots in the music; I dont think that's possible. Any computer would crash before it catches up to their speed ;)
-
@Gairlochan Majority of their music comes off as that, but not everything has to be slow to have feeling. I personally think their album Images and Words is one of the more musical/emotive works ive heard in a pretty long time. If you have the ability and skill, why not put it to use? Jeff beck is one of my favorite guitarists, his phrasing is impeccable. But I highly doubt he can play at the skill level Petrucci does. Playing fast and technical is fun to them, let it be.

To anyone that thinks Dream Theater have no 'musicality'- Please listen to one of their songs More than once before making this judgement!!! I agree, the first time i listened to them I thought nothing of them. Listen to a song/ album 7 or 8 times then tell me you don't like them.

@Gairlochan Listen to "Wither". No technicality, all passion.
-
Dream Theater exists to keep other musicians humble...
-
@Gairlochan Gross overgeneralization.. I mean they do write songs too. Like Octavarium, To Live Forever, Pull me under to name the first ones of the top of my head.
But ive seen them live. There is alot of technical wankery.

@MasonWilliamsMusic, Yes, they'll wasted on him.Guitarists like Jimi, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and many others, and keyboardists like Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, Jan Hammer and Keith Emerson all know instinctively how to use their technique to musical ends. Have a listen to YouTube clips of Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer to hear some real music, bearing in mind that Jeff Beck has played session for a who's who of the music industry in a long career and has nothing to prove to anybody.

I'm inclined to agree. This band is all technique, speed, notes-per-second 'adrenaline-junkie' noise, with virtually no actual musicality or human expression; they might as well let a computer play it for them and save themselves the bother. What rock music gained in the 60s and 70s it has largely lost in the decades since. Lots of virtuoso bands can match them for technique or come close, but they use their technique constructively, as a tool to play real music with instead of just showing off.
