Mexican authorities said they  detained more than 500 illegal immigrants from Central America and Asia who were crammed inside two tractor-trailers heading toward the United States

The drivers of both trucks sped away aft, but police apprehended them nearby.

Inside, they found 513 people from El Salvador, Ecuador, China, Japan, Guatemala, India, Nepal, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

Each paid $7,000 to travel to the United States

@242467 We have to understand the current anti-immigration climate as part of a larger trajectory in which the lives of migrants have become much more difficult, especially those without authorization. We've seen a very significant increase in the repressive apparatus; the US border patrol has grown from about 4300 hundred agents in 1995 to about 20,000 today.

@chpboy1623 The number of people in immigrant detention has grown from about 10,000 in the mid 1990s to well over 35,000 people in immigrant detention on a daily basis. The US is deporting well over a thousand people every day. The Obama administration is ready to set a record in terms of the number of deportations this year.So in that sense, in terms of the short term trajectory, it doesn't look very likely immigration activists are going to make any headway.

@GeauxNOSaints Just as I think people should have a right to migrate, I also believe people should have a right to stay. And we have to look at the conditions that are driving people to migrate.

@GeauxNOSaints Places like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico in many ways are very unjust societies with profound levels of instability and inequality and a lot of these factors are DRIVEN by US foreign policy. It's hardly a coincidence we see huge numbers of Latin Americans flocking to LA, DC, and New York, because these are places that were ravaged by US foreign policies during the 80s and the 90s as the US propped up Military backed terrorist states

In the case of Mexico, NAFTA which was put into place by the Clinton Administration has predictably helped to drive well over a Million Mexican campesinos into American cities, and given that the economies in Mexican cities aren't growing quickly enough, these people end up migrating to the United States.

We have a lot of work to do, and part of what we have to do is look at what's driving these people to move in the first place, but more importantly we have to make the United States a country that respects migrants first and foremost as human beings and DOESN'T see them as outsiders or, in the words of some bigots, "invaders" which is disgusting to think of any human being in that light.
