Hello Dee-Diana,
Manfred Mann laid claim to being the first British group to perform behind the Iron Curtain. This is not so, Tony Bolton and the Federals were the first. Both the Federals and Helen Shapiro were breaking new ground when they toured Romania.

I'm very surprised that helen shapiro was allowed to perform in that time a communist country. Were there many artists from the west in the 60's that were allowed to tour behind the iron curtain ?

I know who Tony Bolton is. I used to play in the Beatniks back in 59. We used to play the American Airbases around the London area, the California Ballroom at Dunstable and many other venues. Tony went on to form the Federals with Mike Bush (Base) and Roy Brown (drums). Me, I got a proper job.
If anyone knows of Tony's whereabouts I would like to catch up with him. Cheers,
