The reason Green Day went mainstream is simply for more fans to get their music. If they were still independent, hardly anyone would know who they were, and they won't have enough success as they do now.

Bass line is epic!!! I will admit, I found green day because of American Idiot but then I later went back and listened to the old stuff from dookie, insomniac, etc and that stuff rocked!! I am sick of a lot of these fans of the old green day calling them sell outs because of American idiot. They actually "sold out" when dookie came out because of it's commercial success. I don't care what anyone says. Green day will forever be one of the best rock bands of this generation!!!

@Warhawk3800 No, they actually sold out. Look just how they wear. 10 (and more) years ago they didn't give a fuck about new fashions, they put on what they liked. Look at their concert. They look like popstars. Their lyrics? Those were irreverent, unconventional, sometimes very unpleasant or pungent. Now they are almost the same of all the other pop crap out there. You cannot say they did not sold out. They DID. They almost are not the same band. Look at bands like NOFX. Matured but not sold out

Dude they sold out cuz they used to be straight up punk rock. I'm not talkig about the lyrics I mean in general they were a great punk band. But Now they are like pop rock. That's how they sold out.
